Madaniya’s Monthly Newsletter Dear colleagues and representatives of civil society organisations, We hope this finds you in good health and spirits. July witnessed a painful escalation in violence and sectarian tensions, compounding the challenges our people face and threatening Syria’s social fabric. We honour the victims and reaffirm our commitment to justice, citizenship, and democracy, as we continue working together to build the Syria future generations deserve.

On 6 June 2025, Madaniya marked two years since its founding, now bringing together over 240 Syrian civil society organisations inside Syria and abroad. Established during political stalemate, Madaniya created a shared civic infrastructure to support coordination, a unified voice, and policy engagement. Over the past two years, we have advanced civil society’s role through dialogue, joint positions, and initiatives. As the political context shifts and the regime has fallen, Madaniya enters a new phase focused on strengthening civil society’s role in the transition.

The month of May marked a significant moment for the Syrian people, with the beginning of the lifting of US and European sanctions on Syria. This is a meaningful step towards rebuilding a new Syria—reviving its institutions and key sectors, and working towards a dignified life for all Syrians. We are also pleased to welcome 35 new member organisations to Madaniya, further strengthening our collective presence and shared purpose. Yet it also carried much hope, with celebrations marking the revolution’s anniversary, Nowruz, the onset of Ramadan, and the anticipation of Eid al-Fitr for the first time without the Assad regime. This month, we witnessed together a historic moment in Syria as we turned the page on a dark era of Assad's regime. After fourteen years since the start of the Syrian revolution and the tremendous, sincere efforts made by Syrians, we are finally reclaiming our country and our spaces, taking a new step toward restoring our political agency. Today, we continue our work as civic actors with a spirit of shared responsibility, aiming to be a fundamental part of building a transitional phase that solidifies the values of a state governed by law and citizenship. At Madaniya, we remain committed to our principles and values, determined to play an active role in the collective effort to shape an inclusive transitional phase. This phase will pave the way to fulfill the aspirations of all Syrians and safeguard their rights without discrimination or exception. Today, together, we embark on the journey of rebuilding the state we have long dreamed of and struggled for: a state of rights and citizenship. Together, we will move forward steadfastly to protect this state and uphold its values. Madaniya’s Monthly Newsletter Dear colleagues and representatives of civil society organisations, We hope you are doing well. The rapid developments in Aleppo and Idlib over the past few days have highlighted the fragility of the situation in Syria and the failure of policies aimed at containing the stalemated conflict and managing it through a de facto approach. In light of these developments, accompanied by the regime and its allies’ airstrikes on vital infrastructure and the potential for severe military escalation across the region, Madaniya believes that the balance of power has shifted. This underscores the urgent need to revitalise the political process in accordance with Resolution 2254, addressing all its components rather than limiting efforts to the ineffective constitutional track. At Madaniya, we reaffirm our pivotal role as civic actors during this critical phase. We are committed to employing all possible means to protect civilians and civil infrastructure, document violations committed by all parties, and create the necessary conditions to empower the civil administration in areas now under control. This includes ensuring their independence by activating state institutions operating within these areas and involving local cadres from the community at both political and service levels. This month, we have witnessed rapid developments in the Syrian political landscape, particularly concerning normalisation with Turkey and several European Union countries. Alongside these developments, there have been continued severe violations against Syrian refugees in Lebanon, as well as escalating violence, assaults, and forced deportations of Syrian refugees in Turkey. We have also seen ongoing movements demanding rights across Syrian territories, from Sweida in the south to Idlib, northern Aleppo countryside, and Qamishli in the north. This situation raises a pressing question about our role as active participants in the civic space, a question we hope to explore and engage with in a manner befitting the significance of this political moment.
