Amina Khoulani
Amina Khoulani is the Vice Chairwoman of Madaniya. She is also the co-founder of Families for Freedom, a women-led movement advocating for justice and freedom for those forcibly disappeared in detention centers in Syria. Ms. Khoulani serves on the Board of Directors for several Syrian civil society organisations, including the Syrian British Consortium and the Hurras Network. Additionally, she is a member of the Syria Resource Group, a multidisciplinary brain trust of Syrian experts working to assist international governments in developing principled policy options for Syria's recovery.
In 2003, Ms. Khoulani co-founded the Daraya Youth Group for Peaceful Change, emerging as an early advocate for a peaceful Syria. She and her husband survived detention in the Syrian regime's prisons following their participation in civic and non-violent demonstrations during the Syrian uprising. Unfortunately, her three brothers remain forcibly disappeared.
Ms. Khoulani actively participated in the first official session held by the UN Security Council addressing the issue of detention in Syria. Her dedication to human rights defense earned her the International Women of Courage Award from the US State Department in 2020. Ms. Khoulani holds a master’s degree in history and a diploma in education from Damascus University.
